KU volleyball falls at No. 24 Creighton

September 11, 2013

— Freshman middle blocker Tayler Soucie slammed three block assists to help Kansas University fight off match point seven times against No. 24-ranked Creighton, but the Bluejays defeated the Jayhawks, 25-21, 15-25, 25-17, 29-27, on Tuesday night.

Creighton (5-1) defeated Kansas (4-3) for the first time in series history.

Soucie had 12 block assists, breaking KU’s match record of 11, set by teammate Caroline Jarmoc last season.

“We were not really focused in the first set, and then we played maybe our best set of the year,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “But then you’ve got to come out of the locker room and back that up. Obviously, we didn’t have them ready in set three. We battled a little bit in set four, but you can’t dig a hole like that. It’s just disappointing that we can’t play more consistently at a high level against a good opponent.”

The Jayhawks outblocked the Bluejays, 18-16, but Creighton had the upper hand nearly everywhere else.

In her first start since leaving the UMKC match because of an injury, Chelsea Albers had 11 kills and nine digs and tied her career high with eight blocks. She led the team with a .348 attack percentage.

The Jayhawks will travel to Madison, Wis., to face Milwaukee and Wisconsin on Friday at the Inntowner Invitational. Kansas will play Bowling Green on Saturday.
