25th annual Haskell Art Market this weekend

The Haskell Art Market will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with the annual event scheduled for this weekend.

The art market will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Powwow Grounds on the western part of Haskell Indian Nations University’s campus in Lawrence.

“A lot of people come from all over just to visit our market,” said Lee Pahcoddy, an event organizer. “We get pretty good attendance.”

The event showcases original, handmade items made by Native American artists from across the country. Traditional Native American food will be served over in Fry Bread Alley. There will also be booths representing different Haskell student groups.

“This is how they make their fundraising,” Pahcoddy said. “It all goes back to the students.”

The more than 120 art vendors will have a wide variety of offerings, such as jewelry, pottery, paintings, prints, baskets, rugs, sculptures and carvings. The market will also include about 15-20 food vendors. For entertainment, Native American dancing shows will take place both days at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Admission and parking are both free for the event, though pets are not permitted.
