To the editor:
It appears as if the last bastion of expression, choice and individual freedoms has been erased from Lawrence by the few old, stodgy city commissioners who single-handedly seem determined to rule this city with an iron fist by declaring the elimination of sofas from porches by claiming them as fire hazards.
What’s next? A law to eliminate the wearing of baseball caps backwards? An ordinance determining the proper length of girls shorts and banning them on women over 50? And why not a regulation limiting the number of cups of coffee one may consume on any given day?
The problem of sofas on porches is between a landlord and his tenants, that simple. But this ridiculous ordinance goes far beyond the reach and scope of the city commissioners? What’s next? Modeling Lawrence after Topeka? Or teaching Lawrence children preschoolers how to march in goose-step?
