The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the Lawrence area from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.
The advisory includes Douglas, Jefferson and Franklin counties and extends south of Emporia and west of Manhattan.
Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 100 to 105 degrees this afternoon, with a heat index ranging from 104 to 107. The highest temperatures will occur along Interstate 70.
The National Weather Service recommends avoiding prolonged work in the sun or in poorly ventilated areas.
