Letter: Dumber news

To the editor:

This is in response to Shakura Jackson’s Aug. 31 letter, “More dreams.” Good letter Shakura. I also dream of legislators (not politicians) who serve the public good instead of corporate interests, something sorely lacking in Kansas and other ALEC-infested states.

As you, I dream that no one view/persuasion/person controls the news; I dream about a return to news, ala Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. Miley Cyrus is not news and doesn’t warrant headlines any more than does the latest celebrity divorce or peccadillo.

President Obama is considering action in Syria, but is waiting on approval from Congress as is right and proper. This does not make the news except as an afterthought. American news is being dumbed down at all levels. It used to be insightful and was used to inform so that people could form their own opinions; now it’s used to tell us what to think.
