From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 7, 1913:

• “The old wooden bridge on the Eudora road known as ‘Bowman’s Bridge’ is to be replaced very soon by a modern concrete structure. The county commissioners are now advertising for bids on this work and hope to award a contract on September 13 when the bids are opened. The new structure is to be of the latest type of bridge, it is to be made 38 feet wide and 50 feet long. The bridge is to be unusually wide taking the place of a structure that is but 14 feet wide. However, this is an extremely dangerous corner and by widening the bridge the commissioners hope to lessen the danger considerably. This increase in width will give a chance for a bigger turn and in addition to this it will be impossible for a car to go over the side of the bridge as a concrete railing three feet high will be erected on each side of the bridge…. It was at this place that Martin Babb lost his life three years ago when a car in which he was riding plunged through the railing and into the creek below. There have been several other accidents at this place and the commissioners felt that it was necessary that the place be made safer and hence have ordered the concrete bridge and have decided to make it unusually wide and to supply a substantial railing.”
• “The Salvation Army finds itself so much occupied with work in this city that the officers do not have time to keep up the finances as they should be kept up. Ensign Morris is anxious to have the people know that there is a lot of work being done and that it is necessary to have money in order to continue it in the right way. This is a good work and the people of Lawrence have always responded when the call was made for funds. It is believed they will do so at this time.”
• “C. B. Hosford is mayor of Lawrence today. And Mr. Hosford will hold that office for several days at least. Mr. Hosford as president of the council is occupying the position of the chief executive while Mayor Bond is out of town. The mayor is spending a part of the week on his farm and left the city in charge of the mayor pro tem.”
• “Jim Monroe, the night watchman who is known by everyone, is fifty-three year old, was born in Lawrence and has lived on the same lot on New Jersey street for fifty years. This lot and four others have been owned by members of the Monroe family for more than fifty years. Who will beat this record?”
