From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 6, 1988:

• Retired Kansas University janitor Josephine Gfeller of Lawrence reported that she was “still numb” today after having won $25,000 over the weekend in the Kansas Lottery. Gfeller, 71, had lived at the same home for over 40 years and had retired five years ago after 17 years at KU. “I have some bills I’m going to pay. After that, it’s up to me. I just don’t know,” said Gfeller when asked about her plans for the jackpot winnings. Gfeller had been buying groceries at a North Lawrence store two weeks previously when she decided to try her luck. “I was paying for my groceries and I had a dollar left over so I said to the little girl, ‘Why don’t I just take a ticket.'” After winning $5 with that scratch-off ticket, she had purchased another five tickets, none of which had been winners. However, after mailing the spent tickets to lottery headquarters in Topeka, she had been surprised by a phone call notifying her that she had been selected in a drawing for the “Kansas Lottery Live” television program. “My heart almost leaped out of my chest,” Gfeller said.
• A new cookbook titled “Essence of KANSAS!” was making its debut at the Kansas State Fair this month in Hutchinson. The 208-page cookbook included recipes by 4-H members as well as notable Kansans such as Gov. Mike Hayden (who submitted a recipe for Pheasant Deluxe), KU Chancellor Gene Budig (ranch beans), Kansas State University President Jon Wefald (pea soup), and Pittsburg State University President Donald W. Wilson (barbecued chicken).
