Asphalt Orchestra to open Lied Center season

A guerrilla-music force from New York City is scheduled to open the Lied Center’s 2013-2014 season at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Asphalt Orchestra, a 12-member group, combines classical, rock, pop and jazz music to create an ambitious and radical show. The diversity of the songs featured in the performance could be heard at either a concert hall or a rock club. Its repertoire ranges from music by jazz legend Charles Mingus to songs by rocker Frank Zappa, as well as new music written specifically for the band.

The group has performed in London, Washington, D.C., and New York and has been praised in national publications like The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

Tickets are available at the Lied Center Ticket Office from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, by telephone at 785-864-2787, or online at lied.ku.edu. The Lied Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
