The League of Women Voters of Lawrence-Douglas County is starting a series of programs to explain its mission and its position on local, state and national issues.
The first presentation, titled "The ABC's of County Government: Its Function in Our Daily Lives," will be held on Sept. 19 in the Douglas County Courthouse commission room. County Commission Chairman Mike Gaughan will speak and County Administrator Craig Weinaug will be on hand to answer questions.
The presentations typically will be held on the third Thursday of every month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and those who attend are encouraged to bring their lunch.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan group that encourages and registers people to vote. Marilyn Roy, a League member who helped develop the new programs, said the League also develops positions on some issues and policy.
"What these programs are designed to do is bring those issues forward to the people," Roy said. "Our purpose is to demonstrate what we do and how the League can connect with — and hopefully help — people in Lawrence."
