Haskell football falls in opener

— Malcolm Coleman had 40 carries for 215 yards and three touchdowns — two rushing, one receiving — but Haskell Indian Nations University dropped its football season opener, 41-24, to Bethel on Saturday.

Coleman had a 10-yard scoring run to give HINU its only lead, at 6-0, with 11:15 left in the first quarter.

Bethel pulled away after a narrow 21-18 halftime lead.

Haskell outrushed Bethel, 266 yards to 209, but the Indians threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles.

The outcome snapped Bethel’s 14-game losing streak and its 16-game losing streak on its home field.

Haskell will host Avila at 6 p.m. Saturday.
