25 years ago: Construction begins on KU parking garage

September 1, 2013

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 1, 1988:

  • Construction began this week on Kansas University's $3.7 million parking garage north of Allen Fieldhouse. The garage, which was to hold 775 cars, was expected to be completed within a year. Although the work was displacing 141 yellow-permit holders, KU parking officials said that adequate yellow zone parking continued to be available directly west of Memorial Stadium, and 83 new yellow spaces had been added this summer by a redesign of a lot just north of Anschutz Pavilion. Total budget for the garage project, including parking controls, street repairs, and turning lanes, was $5.4 million.
  • Gov. Mike Hayden today named longtime Lawrence attorney Fred Six to the Kansas Supreme Court, just a year after Six had been sworn in as a member of the Kansas Court of Appeals. Hayden said in his announcement statement that Six possessed "a keen intellect, an immeasurable sense of fairness, high integrity, a distinguished legal career and an impeccable record of service throughout the legal community."
