25 years ago: Vandalism, theft reported in Lawrence on night before Halloween

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 31, 1988:

Halloween goblins were forecast to be on the loose in Lawrence tonight, and they had gotten an early start the previous evening as some vandalism and other mischief were reported in Lawrence. A man living in the 2000 block of Jenny Wren Road said that someone had damaged his mailbox with a pumpkin, and an unknown person had also tossed a pumpkin at a vehicle in the 900 block of West 29th Terrace. The Dillons store on W. 27th Street reported the theft of eight pumpkins, valued at $16.20, and a woman in the 1000 block of Alabama reported that her car had been egged. Another Lawrence resident was out of luck today as police received a report that someone had broken into a car in the 1400 block of Tennessee and had stolen a costume consisting of a 1920s-style flapper dress with rhinestones and a black headband with rhinestones and a feather. The outfit was valued at $100. As for the small trick-or-treaters expected to be out tonight, police spokesman Chris Mulvenon said, “We will be on the alert. We are just prepared and will be aware that little ghosts and goblins will be running around.”
