As 2-5 Kansas University prepares for a trip to Austin, Texas, this weekend to take on the 5-2 Longhorns, the two opposing head coaches are turning to the same thing for motivation — last year’s game film.

For Kansas coach Charlie Weis, who narrowly missed out on a monumental upset of the Longhorns last season in Lawrence when UT scored a touchdown with 12 seconds left to win 21-17, the idea of using last year’s tape will be to show his team what’s possible, what it looks like to compete with — even have its way with — Texas for four quarters, and, perhaps most importantly, what can happen if you let up.

“I have a lot of respect for Texas and their program and am especially fond of their head coach,” said Weis, who is close friends with Texas coach Mack Brown. “Because we didn’t put the game away when we had an opportunity to put it away, it didn’t surprise me that they came back and beat us. If you have an opportunity to put a good team away, you better because, if not, something like that could end up happening.”

For Brown, who was on the hottest of hot seats just three weeks ago but found relief with a convincing victory over Red River rival Oklahoma and four consecutive victories overall, the idea of showing last year’s film to the Longhorns will be done for the opposite reason. Asked Monday about motivating his players to get up for Kansas, Brown made it sound simple.

“They were all at our game last year,” he said. “I’ll just pull out last year’s film. You got out by the skin of your teeth with less than 12 seconds left. If that doesn’t help get you excited about Saturday, nothing should.”

Homecoming, kind of

There will not be a parade, a dance or the crowning of a king and queen, but Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. kickoff for the Longhorns will be a homecoming of sorts.

That’s because it’s been more than a month since Texas played a game at Darrell K. Royal-Memorial Stadium, playing instead the past three games away from home, with victories at Iowa State, against Oklahoma in Dallas and at TCU last weekend.

Because of the scheduling quirk, which included a bye week sprinkled in and kept UT fans away from their home field for the past 38 days, Brown said he expected a big, enthusiastic crowd this weekend.

“I’m excited about being back,” Brown said. “I’m glad that we’re on a little wave of momentum here, and the fans know how badly we want to keep winning. Saturday is critical for us to get to our ultimate goal. They were (left) for dead coming into Kansas State last time we were here (Sept. 21). They’ve risen up. They’re playing hard.”

KU-OSU set for 3 p.m.

Kickoff for KU’s Nov. 9 game at Oklahoma State has been set for 3 p.m. and will be televised by FOX Sports One, Big 12 Conference officials announced Monday.

The game, which will feature the Jayhawks trying to snap a three-game losing streak to OSU, will be KU’s third appearance on the newly launched sports channel this season.
