Brannen Greene tonight makes his Kansas University basketball debut against a familiar foe — his dad’s alma mater, Pittsburg State.

“We haven’t talked about it much,” said Greene, KU’s 6-foot-7 freshman from Juliette, Ga. “He’s one of the all-time leading scorers at Pittsburg State. It’s my dad’s old school. Other than that, I’ll just play my game.”

Jeff Greene scored 1,292 points in 56 games during the 1987-88 and ’88-89 seasons, ranking eighth-highest on the career scoring list. It’s the highest two-year scoring total in school history. He had a single-season record 716 points in 1988.

“It’s just another game. I’m going to do what coach (Bill) Self wants me to do,” said Greene, who believes he’s ready. “College is definitely different from high school in the speed and intensity you play with. Every play you have to play hard. I’m getting better at it. I’m starting to get used to it.”

Red-shirts possible: KU’s six freshmen could play tonight and in Tuesday’s exhibition against Fort Hays State and still be red-shirted in accordance with NCAA rules.

“We could,” Self said of possibly red-shirting a player or two. “We do have some good freshmen, and they need to figure it out, all of them. So hopefully we can get everybody a little bit of a chance to play in the exhibition. I thought initially we’d red-shirt at least one, and I’m not even sure about that right now. I really don’t have a feel. Hopefully the exhibition games will give us a better feel of that.”

White excelling: Self is thrilled with the progress of sophomore Andrew White III. “He’s emerged as one of our best performers, without question, in practice. He’s always shot it good, but he’s more confident shooting it now. He’s one of our better rebounders, he’s one of our better runners in transition, and he just tries so darned hard all the time. Yeah, Andrew White has put him in position to certainly be part of our rotation,” Self said.

Sophomore walk-on Tyler Self is expected to miss the next four to five weeks because of a severe sprain on the top of his foot. He will not need surgery, Bill Self said.
