FSHS girls 1st at XC regional

? Three Free State High runners placed in the top four to lead the Firebirds’ girls cross country team to a Class 6A regional championship on Saturday at Milford State Park.

Freshman Emily Venters won an individual championship with a 4K time of 14:43.63. Senior Bailey Sullivan was regional runner-up with 14:52.29, and sophomore Claire Sanner placed fourth in 15:00.01. Freshman Kieran Cordes (ninth, 15:41.43) and senior Sarah Whipple (16th, 16:24.95) finished out the scoring for FSHS, which outdistanced second-place Maize 32-68 in the team standings.

Free State’s boys team also qualified for state, earning third place with 81 points. Junior Ryan Liston led the way for the Firebirds with an eighth-place 16:43.38 in the 5K.

The 6A state meet will be held Saturday at Rim Rock Farm.
