A 37-year-old Lawrence man is under arrest on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence and reckless driving after what police describe as a series of crashes that ended in a collision with a Dunkin’ Donuts Dumpster early Saturday.

Lawrence police and an ambulance were dispatched to Taco Bell, 1215 W. Sixth St., at about 12:45 a.m. to check on Shaun Cameron Roberson, who they say was passed out in a running Dodge Durango in the restaurant’s drive-thru lane. Police say Roberson was unresponsive and that brick-sized round rocks were placed under the front tires of his Durango to keep it from rolling forward.

Lawrence police and paramedics were able to wake Roberson by shaking the vehicle. When he awoke, police say, he floored the accelerator and cleared the rocks, continuing “out of control” west through the parking lot.

According to the police report, the vehicle became airborne for about 10 yards after striking the sloped grade that separates the restaurant from the nearby Raco Car Wash. Roberson continued west, crashing through Anderson Rentals’ east gate and continuing through that property before crashing through another gate and on to Michigan Street.

Police say there were no vehicles on Michigan Street as Roberson made his way across the street and into the east entrance to Dunkin’ Donuts, 1400 W. Sixth St., where the Durango came to a stop after striking a Dumpster wall.

Roberson, who was not injured, was booked into Douglas County Jail where he remained Saturday morning on a $1,200 bond. In addition to reckless driving and second-offense operating under the influence, Roberson was also booked on suspicion of transporting an open container.
