51-year-old Lawrence man identified in train collision death

Lawrence police identified the man who died after being struck by a train near Burcham Park on Tuesday as 51-year-old Jerry D. Claypool of Lawrence.

Claypool was hit by an eastbound train on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe track and was pronounced dead by medical staff before arriving at a hospital, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman.

Police and fire-medical personnel responded to the collision near the 400 block of Ohio Street at around 2:35 p.m. Tuesday. Claypool, found under the train, was removed and placed in an ambulance to be taken to Lawrence Municipal Airport for airlift to a trauma center. Claypool did not respond to life-saving efforts and the Lifestar helicopter was called off.

Police say Claypool was seen walking on the tracks before the collision in an area where no roadway or pedestrian crossing was present. Police and officials from BNSF continue to investigate.
