Resident pens essay, plans signing for new ‘Chicken Soup’ book

Lawrence resident Lorraine Cannistra has a story featured in the recently released Chicken Soup for the Soul book, “From Lemons to Lemonade.”

Cannistra, who was born with cerebral palsy, was Ms. Wheelchair Kansas 2007 and counts wheelchair ballroom dancing among her hobbies. A mortifying experience during her college graduation ceremony — and what she did after it — inspired her essay, “Learning to Fly,” found in the chapter of the book entitled “From Victim to Victory.”

Cannistra will sign copies of the book and give a wheelchair ballroom dancing demonstration between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Nov. 2 at Signs of Life, 722 Massachusetts St.

Cannistra also has a story in the new holiday Chicken Soup for the Soul book, “It’s Christmas! 101 Joyful Stories about the Love, Fun, and Wonder of the Holidays.” Her story, “Better than Disney World,” is included in the chapter “From the Mouths of Babes.”
