Area football roundup: Tonganoxie tops Perry-Lecompton

Tonganoxie — Cole Holloway ran for 176 yards on just 17 carries as Tonganoxie cruised to a 37-8 football win Friday against Perry-Lecompton in its Class 4A District 2 opener at Beatty Field.

The Chieftains (6-1, 1-0 district) racked up 326 rushing yards in the win and shut out the Kaws (3-4, 0-1) until the final minute of the fourth quarter.

THS went in front on a two-yard touchdown run by Tyler Ford in the first quarter, then tacked on 10 more points in the second. Holloway, who has 1,035 rushing yards this season, scored from eight yards out midway through the period, and Eric Tate kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired to give the Chieftains a 17-0 halftime lead.

The Kaws looked to answer when Reed Mitchell returned the a kickoff to the THS 18-yard line to open the second half, but the Chieftains forced a turnover-on-downs. They followed the defensive stop with an 86-yard drive, capped by a four-yard touchdown pass from Ford to Maleak Gibson.

Following a PLHS fumble on the ensuing drive, Shane Levy made it 31-0 THS with a five-yard score. The defense then forced a three-and-out, and Jared Sommers returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter.

The Kaws broke up the shutout on a 16-yard touchdown run by Taylor Spencer with just 52 seconds remaining.

Levy nearly joined Holloway as a 100-yard rusher, carrying the ball 14 times for 95 yards. Perry-Lecompton’s Austin Kurtz put up 167 yards on the ground, including a 70-yard run on the team’s final drive.

THS will travel next week to Meriden to face Jeff West (6-1, 1-0). The Tigers defeated Basehor-Linwood in Friday’s other district game, squeaking out a 36-35 win in overtime.

Eudora 14, Santa Fe Trail 13

Eudora — Grant Elston scored on a one-yard run with 1:28 remaining, then kicked the extra point as Eudora edged Santa Fe Trail.

Eudora built a 7-0 halftime lead on a 31-yard run by Elston. Santa Fe Trail tied it in the third quarter and went ahead 13-7 in the fourth, but Eudora blocked Santa Fe’s extra-point kick after the second touchdown.

The Cardinals (5-2) will entertain Ottawa on Friday.

Baldwin 61, Ottawa 0

Ottawa — The third-ranked Class 4A Bulldogs wrapped up at least a share of the Frontier League title with a victory against Ottawa.

Baldwin is 7-0 overall, 5-0 in the Frontier League and 1-0 in district play.

Baldwin ground out an opening touchdown drive set up with the recovery of an unsuccessful Ottawa onside kick. The Bulldogs then turned to the big play as they built a 42-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Chad Berg rushed for a 71-yard touchdown and connected with fellow seniors Cornell Brown and Tim Craig for scoring strikes of 45 and 42 yards. The first-half onslaught continued with rushing touchdowns from Brown from 18 yards out and 32-yard run from sophomore Jake Katzer.

Baldwin continues district play on the road Friday against Santa Fe Trail. Ottawa plays at Eudora.
