From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 18, 1973:

• Lawrence School District 497 was planning to survey parents of all students in local schools to learn how many local children needed a federally subsidized breakfast. The board of education had voted 4 to 2 at this week’s meeting to conduct the survey following an administrative committee’s recommendation not to begin a district breakfast program. At their September meeting, the board had requested the feasibility of a breakfast program be studied after a decision had been made to continue a special milk program after federal subsidies had been discontinued. Board members had rejected the recommendation because the need for a breakfast program had not yet been objectively studied.
• U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and North Vietnamese Politburo member Le Duc Tho were awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize this week for their efforts to officially end the Vietnam war. Other candidates for the prize had included President Nixon, President Tito of Yugoslavia, and 10 international organizations. Kissinger was then the 16th American to win or share in the peace prize since it had first been awarded in 1901; Le Duc Tho was the first Asian to win the prize.
