From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 18, 1988:

• A two-hour local television program this week had invited public callers to weigh in on the city’s secondary school options. The program, “Lawrence Schools: What’s Ahead,” had featured members of the Secondary Schools Facilities Task Force, which had discussed solutions to overcrowding at Lawrence High School. The task force had recommended the city to build a new school for juniors and seniors, keeping the current Lawrence High School building for freshmen and sophomores. School board members were now considering that recommendation and were due to make a decision by January 1989. Other options under discussion were building a second high school or leaving ninth-graders at the junior high schools and building a fourth junior high.
• The owners of two historic landmarks in Lawrence were among the seven winners of awards from the Kansas Preservation Alliance. Austin Turner, owner of the Samuel Riggs House, 1501 Pennsylvania, was recognized for his efforts, as were the Eldridge House Investors for their work in undertaking the rehabilitation of the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Massachusetts.
