Lawrence man arrested, injured in Tuesday morning burglary of antique store

A 25-year-old Lawrence man was arrested and injured after struggling with officers responding to the burglary of an antique store Tuesday morning, according to Lawrence police.

Zebulon Vaughn Jones Taylor was booked into Douglas County Jail at 5:45 a.m. on suspicion of aggravated burglary, criminal damage and felony obstruction of a legal procedure after a passerby noticed the glass front door to Big G’s Antiques, 547 Indiana St., had been shattered.

As responding officers approached the store on foot, a suspect carrying a backpack exited through the broken glass and ran from the officers. They were able to catch up to Taylor and struggled with him in an attempt to take him into custody, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman.

Police allege that Taylor took about $3,000 in property from the business and that they recovered it from his backpack.

Taylor was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital before being taken to jail, McKinley said. Taylor faces charges of aggravated burglary because an occupied apartment is attached to the business.
