Free State football still No. 2 in 6A

The 17-10, overtime victory against Shawnee Mission East that allowed Free State High’s football team to clinch a share of the Sunflower League championship also helped it maintain its No. 2 spot in Class 6A.

Still unbeaten Topeka (6-0) moved up a spot to No. 3, as SME (5-1) slipped to No. 4. Gardner-Edgerton (5-1) held steady at No. 5.

FSHS travels to Kansas City, Kan., Wyandotte on Friday to open district play.

Though Mill Valley remained undefeated and beat Piper, 21-14, this past week, the Jaguars dropped a spot to No. 5 in the 5A rankings.

No. 1 Bishop Carroll (6-0), No. 2 Bishop Miege (5-1), No. 3 Blue Valley (4-2) and No. 4 Salina South (4-2) all rank ahead of MVHS.

In 4A, Baldwin (6-0) kept its perfect record intact and remained at No. 3 in 4A’s top five. Like the Bulldogs, No. 1 Holton, No. 2 Andale and No. 4 Buhler haven’t lost this season. No. 5 Paola is 5-1.
