18-year-old Lawrence man arrested after fleeing early morning injury accident

An 18-year-old Lawrence resident was booked into Douglas County Jail early Saturday morning on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident, among other charges.

Austen Chatten Twombley was arrested in the 2100 block of Bob Billings Parkway at 2:09 a.m. after by officers searching for two passengers fleeing the scene of an injury accident.

Lawrence Police and Fire Medical crews were called to the 1300 block of Iowa Street after 1 a.m. on a report of an overturned vehicle, Journal-World news partner Operation 100 reported.

Police found that a vehicle had left the roadway, gone over a barrier and landed on its side near a wooded area. Two of the vehicle’s passengers were injured, one seriously. Information on the injured passengers’ identities and latest condition was unavailable.

At the scene, the driver and another occupant were seen running into the nearby wooded area after the crash. Police set up a perimeter and quickly located one of those who had fled. There was no information regarding the second person.

In addition to leaving the scene of an injury accident, Twombley also was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, failure to report an accident, a second-offense operating under the influence charge and having no insurance.

Twombley was released from jail Saturday on a $1,800 bond.
