Aquahawks openings: The Aquahawks are always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. Summer bike ride: Lawrence Bicycle Club Summer Fun Beginner’s Ride will be held Mondays. The ride begins at 6:45 p.m. at Cycle Works, 2121 Kasold, preceded at 6:15 for tech and riding tips. The ride will be approximately 10 miles (the first few rides will be seven miles) at 10 mph, mostly on the bike path. All are welcome; kids under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and all children under 18 must have a waiver form signed by a parent or guardian. 14U baseball: A new 14U baseball team is forming, which will play tournaments in the Kansas City, Topeka, and Lawrence areas. League play has yet to be decided, but is a possibility. Basketball officials needed: Lawrence Parks & Recreation is taking applications for individual interested in officiating youth basketball. Openings are available in Recreational Leagues (Saturday games) and in the more competitive Hoopster Leagues (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday). Maple Leaf Run: The Maple Leaf Run will be held Oct. 19 at Baldwin City Golf Course. Cost for the 5K run is $20 and includes entry fee and a shirt. There also will be a one-mile walk and one-mile kids run, with trophies for kids runners and medals for the 5K. Middle school girls hoops: Registration continues for the Lawrence Parks & Recreation/USD 497 Girls Intramural Basketball Program for sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Registration deadline is Oct. 10. Cost is $55. Practices start the week of October 21, with games starting on Nov. 2. All games will be played at the middle schools. Volunteer coaches are needed for all middle school teams. The coaches meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Oct. 17 at Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 West 27th Street. Purdy induction: Former Lawrence High football coach Dick Purdy will be inducted into the KSHSAA Hall of Fame during halftime of the Lions’ Oct. 11 home game against Olathe North. The LHS Football Backers tailgate will host an open house for Purdy and his family beginning at 5:30 p.m., prior to kickoff. The coach’s friends and former players are invited to attend. A postgame gathering for the hall of fame coach will take place at LHS, as well. Purdy, who also coached Shawnee Mission West to a state title in 1972, led Lawrence to four straight state championships from 1990-93 and won his sixth state crown in 1995 at LHS.

Group run: Every Thursday at 6 p.m., Garry Gribble’s RunningSports holds a group run from its store. It’s called “Mass Street Milers,” and all paces and ability levels are welcome. For information, call the store at (785)-856-0434.

RunWalk Lawrence: A new training program called RunWalkLawrence is starting in Lawrence. It is a Jeff Galloway program. Galloway represented the U.S. at the 1972 Munich Olympics and has since helped over a quarter of a million people experience the joys and benefits of running. Galloway has programs in many major cities around the country; this is the first time his program has been offered in Kansas. A “Getting Started” 5K training program targeted at people new to running will begin on Oct. 19. Two informational meetings will be held prior to the program’s start; Wednesdays, Oc. 9 and 16, 7 p.m. at Garry Gribble’s RunningSports, 839 Mass. Questions can be directed to J.
