FSHS football drops to No. 2 after 1st loss

The Free State High football team's first loss of the season only cost it one spot in the rankings.

Coming off a 26-19 road loss to Olathe North, the previously top-ranked Firebirds (4-1) dropped to No. 2 in this week's Kpreps.com Class 6A top five.

Derby (4-1) supplanted FSHS as 6A's No. 1.

Unbeaten Shawnee Mission East, whom the Firebirds will play on the road this Friday, moved up to No. 3 in the new rankings. Topeka (5-0) is No. 4 and Gardner-Edgerton (4-1) is No. 5.

In 5A, undefeated Mill Valley is ranked No. 4, behind No. 1 Bishop Carroll (5-0), No. 2 Bishop Miege (4-1) and No. 3 Salina South (3-2). Kapaun Mt. Carmel (5-0) is fifth.

The 4A top five features only 5-0 teams, including No. 3 Baldwin. Holton is No. 1, followed by Andale, Baldwin, Buhler and Coffeyville.

This is fairly impressive: Game called at halftime, still scored 43 pts.

Last: beat Perry-Lecompton 43-6 Holton beat Perry-Lecompton 43-6 in a game called at halftime after a long weather delay. The Wildcats scored 28 points in the second quarter. Holton rushed for 280 yards in the first half. Brenden Hampton rushed for three touchdowns and returned a kickoff 80 yards for another score.
