To the editor:

Sen. Jerry Moran’s quote in a recent Journal-World story blames President Obama and Democrats for refusing “to come to the table and work toward a responsible solution with those who disagree with them.” He goes on to assert that Democrats “would rather shut down the government than negotiate.” Moran’s assessment (ahem) of the situation is nothing less than rhetorical obfuscation. In fact, the ones shutting down the government are those who cannot accept that the Affordable Care Act is the law.

Republicans want it delayed one year, or there will be no budget negotiations. No logical reason has been offered for this request.

The ACA was on Obama’s agenda when he was elected president; the Supreme Court has upheld the opposition’s efforts to deem it unconstitutional, and Congress has recklessly spent the taxpayers’ money using time and resources trying to the repeal the law 40 times. As House Speaker John Boehner defends these pointless maneuvers, he declares his party is speaking for the “American public.” Let’s be clear. The only “public” he is speaking for are tea party members, their elected officials and others who want to simply see a failed Obama presidency.

What Jerry Moran is saying is the lie that the right wing has instructed the soldiers to say. I've read this line of crap by other republicans no less than a zillion times since the nonsense began. Is anyone paying attention. The ALEC Right Wing Party is in charge of the GOP.

The government shutdown is not the result of a legislative breakdown or both parties refusing to compromise. It is a direct result of the right-wing House Republicans' legislative strategy of taking hostages and making extremist demands that are out of touch with the American people. Report the truth: House Republicans are solely responsible for the government shutdown.

Tell major television networks to report the truth: Republicans are solely to blame for the government shutdown. Is anyone paying attention. The ALEC Right Wing Party is in charge of the GOP.

The Republican leadership in Congress has said as clearly as possible that it does not want people to have access to healthcare and will try to do everything it can to prevent it, including shutting down the government and possibly letting the government default on its debt.

But the major television networks seem determined to make the story of the shutdown one of a partisan standoff where both sides are equally to blame. This is dishonest.

Is anyone paying attention. The ALEC Right Wing Party is in charge of the GOP.

The facts are as clear! The Republicans have opted to use a shutdown as a way of pressuring President Obama to give up or delay the Affordable Care Act.

Media coverage of the government shutdown and who is to blame should reflect these facts and inform the American people, but so far it has largely failed to do so.

The false equivalence and "he-said, she-said" coverage from major television networks and the dysfunctional DC press corps has dangerous implications for the proper functioning of our democracy. If voters who watch television news don't understand the fact that Republicans intentionally created the government shutdown and debt ceiling crises in an unprecedented attempt to extract extreme legislative concessions from Democrats, they won't be able to hold those responsible accountable at the ballot box. Is anyone paying attention?

Absolutely it is not the media’s job to cover for the Republicans. It’s time for the media to come clean on this and report the truth: Republicans are solely responsible for shutting down the government. Again Is anyone paying attention. The ALEC Right Wing Party is in charge of the GOP.
