Lawrence man killed in four-car accident along K-10 in Lenexa

A 52-year-old Lawrence man died Tuesday evening after a four-car crash on Kansas Highway 10 in Lenexa.

Randy R. Schimmel died after his 1983 Dodge pickup truck was involved in the crash, which occurred at about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday between Renner and Ridgeview roads.

Schimmel’s vehicle was side-swiped by a Ford passenger van driven by Cody D. Conley, 27, of Raytown, Mo., as the two traveled eastbound on K-10, causing Schimmel to spin out of control, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Schimmel’s vehicle then crossed the median and entered westbound traffic, where it was struck on the driver’s side door by a third vehicle traveling westbound. The third vehicle, a 2010 Dodge pickup truck, was driven by Jeffrey P. Placek, 42, Lenexa, was then struck by a 2001 Lexus driven by Cynthia S. Green, 55, Shawnee.

Schimmel was pronounced dead at Overland Park Regional Hospital at 8:30 p.m. None of the three other drivers were injured. Schimmel was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the highway patrol.
