It’s good news that city officials appear close to announcing the official name for a new 400-plus-acre business park on the east edge of Lawrence.

The site has been simply known as the “former Farmland Industries” property for too long. It needs a name that better reflects the development and makes it possible to start seriously marketing sites to prospective businesses.

It’s a little shocking for long-time residents to drive by the property located just west of the East Hills Business Park on Kansas Highway 10. The massive infrastructure that supported the Farmland fertilizer plant for many years is gone and major infrastructure work is underway. The city has been working for several years to obtain and reclaim this property, and it’s exciting to see it getting close to providing much-needed industrial space for Lawrence.

City officials say they want to start offering spaces to new tenants later this year or early next year, which means it’s probably past time to start a major marketing campaign to attract new businesses to the area. It’s pretty tough to craft such a campaign without having an official name for the development, a logo and other materials that will be used to promote the new park.

It’s not clear why this decision has taken so long, but city officials certainly have built up the suspense. Let’s hope the resulting name will prove to be worth the wait.
