100 years ago: Salvation Army distributes 20 dinners to needy families

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 28, 1913:

  • “Twenty Thanksgiving dinners were given yesterday by the Lawrence Salvation Army. These dinners went to people who otherwise would have had little to be thankful for yesterday. The army found one family that was in almost destitute condition. In addition to a big dinner these people received clothing and other assistance which the army was able to offer.”
  • “A benefit game for the Associated Charities of Kansas City between the Haskell Indians and Notre Dame University is being planned for Kansas City on Saturday, December 6. Coach Kennedy and the Haskell authorities made the offer yesterday afternoon and the plan is being heartily received by Kansas City people. Notre Dame has been asked for the game and a reply is expected very soon from the authorities of that school. The proceeds of the game would go entirely to charity work. It would be made a great day in Kansas City…. In case a game is scheduled it is quite probable that a part of the proceeds would go to social service work in Lawrence.”
  • “Although usually rated as the third team in importance in local footballdom the Lawrence High school today stands in first place. Position at the head of the football class goes to the High school lads by reason of their victory over Beatrice, Nebraska, yesterday afternoon, said victory being the final of an All-Victorious season…. The locals yesterday journeyed into the northern territory and after sixty minutes of as strenuous football as they have played this season the boys emerged from the ground with a 10 to 6 count in their favor. Soon the wires ticked the message back home telling of the final triumph, the final game of the most glorious season the High school has ever known on the gridiron…. In spite of threatening weather and mud a large delegation of High school students met the returning victorious team at three o’clock and escorted them across the river to the Y. M. C. A., where a demonstration was held.”
  • “Mrs. Flory, visiting nurse for the Social Service League, wishes to thank the class of Mrs. C. A. Shull of the Christian church for their very liberal donation of bedding and to give assurance of hearty appreciation of their generous help in a good cause. The same class made and presented to the visiting nurse committee one hundred and twenty-five infant’s garments which are being distributed by the visiting nurse in her work, where there is great need of them. The good, sensible, practical work of this class should be an inspiration to others to give their aid to the work of the Social Service League.”
  • “A ticket to Topeka was bought by the city police this morning and given to an old lady who said she was 105 years old. She came to Lawrence the first of the week looking for friends. Her money ran out before she learned they had moved to Topeka and so she asked the city for aid. She took a Santa Fe train before noon and expressed confidence of being able to find her friends when she arrived in Topeka.”
  • “Vaccination of all school children in the state schools is urged by Dr. John Sundwall, professor of anatomy at the University of Kansas. Dr. Sundwall in a statement issued here says that the treatment has proven to be a great success wherever tried and urges it as a method of combating typhoid among the children of the state…. ‘No one should take the risk of getting typhoid fever now. In fact, every one should most gladly avail himself of the opportunity to get this treatment which is furnished tree by the state. Over one hundred students have been vaccinated this year at the University of Kansas with not one serious result.'”
