25 years ago: In its fourth year, LINK serves turkey dinner to community

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 25, 1988:

About 135 Thanksgiving meals had been served the previous day in the basement of the First Christian Church, 1000 Kentucky. In its fourth year, the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen was said to have the process “down pat,” with more volunteers applying than the organizers could use. No one had been turned away from the food line, however, and many happy diners were able to sit down to the feast between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., some even enjoying second and third helpings. “I heard several people say they came down to be with somebody. They didn’t have anybody to eat their Thanksgiving meal with,” said Pam Casagrande, one of the organizers. In a new service added this year, volunteers at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church had also prepared and delivered meals to 68 people who were unable to leave their homes. The food served by LINK, including 12 20-pound turkeys, had been donated by local businesses; leftovers were sent to First Step House, Project Acceptance, Hearthstone, and Women’s Transitional Care Services.
