Douglas County’s “farm to preschool” program was recently featured on First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Child Care website as a successful effort to introduce preschool kids to healthy living and eating. However, the program is in danger of discontinuing.

The Douglas County Child Development Association’s Families, Farmers and Educators United program, which is changing its name to Healthy Sprouts, teaches children where their food comes from in an effort to instill healthy habits for life. The program touches on children’s gardens, Community Supported Agriculture, family engagement, wellness policies and education for children and adults.

Healthy Sprouts has trained about 150 child care providers since it started in January 2011. However, the program’s grant funding, which has come from several health foundations, will discontinue in 2014.

An Indiegogo campaign for funding has been launched (www.indiegogo.com/projects/healthy-sprouts) and the organization’s staff is looking to businesses and individuals for contributions to help sustain the program.

A “Save Farm to Child Care” meeting will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Health Facility, 200 Maine St., on the second floor. Community members are invited to participate in a discussion about how the program can be saved. A light dinner and child care will be provided.??
