• A look back at the first twelve months of the Kansas Lottery showed a few mistakes but mostly successes, according to lottery director Larry Montgomery. Speaking from Topeka this week, Montgomery said the state’s year-old lottery had brought in $8.5 million and had been recognized by the lottery industry as one of the top operations in the country. Montgomery said his main mistake had been not dealing more directly with state legislators, an error he intended to correct in the coming year.
• The Douglas County Historical Society was looking into some future improvements for the Elizabeth M. Watkins Community Museum. At the society’s annual meeting, it was announced that the museum had received a $1,400 grant from the American Association of Museums to assist with long-range planning.
• FMC Corp. announced this week its plans to invest $6 million in new equipment to expand the capabilities of its phosphates production facility in North Lawrence. The expansion was to follow a $5 million improvement project two years earlier. The plant produced specialty phosphates for products ranging from soft drinks to livestock feed.
