The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for much of eastern Kansas, warning that gusts in the area may reach 45 mph.

Strong winds blowing north to northwest are expected to develop in late morning and continue through late afternoon. The advisory is set from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to the NWS, winds will blow 25 to 35 mph, with gusts of around 45 mph. The NWS cautions drivers traveling along north-south highways.

Residents in the area are encouraged to secure lawn furniture, outdoor trash cans and other loose or lightweight objects.

Extreme fire behavior is expected this afternoon for central and western Kansas. The low humidity, warm temperatures and strong winds in the area led the NWS to issue a red flag warning until 6 p.m.
