40 years ago: Kansas drivers save gas by ‘slowing down a bit’ — but not to 50 mph

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 17, 1973:

  • Kansas drivers appeared to be slowing down a little in response to President Nixon’s recommendations for saving fuel, but most officials said few had slowed to the suggested 50 miles per hour. “I think drivers are possibly slowing down a bit,” Turnpike Authority Information Director Bob Buzzi said this week, “but I don’t think most will slow to 50. People are just like a bunch of cattle. They don’t do anything they don’t want to do…. It’s hard to drive 50 miles an hour if you’re used to driving 70. It’s hard to do.” Turnpike patrolman Lt. Howard Giles agreed, saying, “There are fewer and fewer cases of high speeds, and a few drivers are running 50 miles an hour, but by no means will a majority slow down to 50 — at least not voluntarily.”
  • Two employees of Hope Craft Art and Stained Glass Works, Kansas City, Mo., were pictured on the front page of the Journal-World today as they carefully removed a damaged section of the stained glass dome in the Douglas County Courthouse. The dome, which had been damaged by high winds during the past summer, was to be repaired in about ten days, a project that was costing the county $500 and the insurance company $5,100.
  • The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission this week recommended 5-4 against city annexation of an 82-acre tract southwest of Lawrence. Annexation of the Nieder Acres was to be discussed again at the Nov. 27 meeting of the Lawrence City Commission, which had referred the proposal to the planners for advice. About 30 residents of the area had appeared at the planning commission’s meeting to protest the annexation.
  • Astronomers announced today that Comet Kohoutek was now readily visible just before sunrise in the southeast sky. The Kansas University observatory was planning a series of open houses in which local experts were to help less practiced astronomers and casual viewers see the comet and track its progress around the sun.
