From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 12, 1973:

• An arraignment was expected this week for Mrs. Nellie Rutledge Schoonover, charged with murdering her 80-year-old husband in late October. The 48-year-old widow remained in the county jail in lieu of $150,000 bond. J. W. Schoonover, the woman’s ninth husband, had been shot three times on Oct. 24 while backing a tractor into a machine shed near his home. The shooting had been reported by Mrs. Schoonover, who told authorities she had rushed from the home at the sound of gunfire and had discovered her husband hanging head-down over the back of the tractor. The Schoonovers had been married about three months at the time of the slaying.
• The runway for the proposed Lawrence airport expansion had grown another 100 feet. Lawrence City Manager Buford Watson told a citizens’ group today that the runway would be 5,000 feet instead of the 4,900 feet originally planned. Watson told the group the change was being made because many people felt it “sounds better” to have a 5,000-foot runway.
• A former owner of the Park 25 apartment complex, 2510 W. 25th, had refunded $10,500 in security deposits to former tenants, according to William Ward, an attorney in the State Attorney General’s office. Refunds were made after representatives of the Consumer Protection Division of the attorney general’s office contacted the former owners, Boetel and Co. of Nebraska.
