From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 11, 1988:

• In a Journal-World photograph, workers were shown installing part of a new 100-foot smokestack at Kansas University’s power plant. About $100,000 had been appropriated to replace the two shorter smokestacks that had violated emissions standards. The emission problems had been discovered the previous year after the demolition of KU’s landmark 250-foot concrete smokestack, which had been in place since the early 1900s.
• The Lawrence Daffodil Club this week donated 350 daffodil bulbs to Douglas County in memory of Ethel Martin, a club member who had lived east of Lawrence. County commissioners announced that the bulbs would be planted on the Massachusetts Street side of the courthouse as well as in front of the Valleyview Care Home, 2518 Ridge Court.
• Scientists announced today that they had discovered what was believed to be the fossilized remains of the world’s oldest insect, described in a press release as a “fuzzy, big-eyed insect resembling a silverfish that lived some 390 million years ago in what is now Canada.” If further testing proved the initial data, the discovery, which was announced in today’s issue of the journal Science, would push the origin of insects back about 50 million years.
