The Lawrence teenager airlifted to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., on Wednesday suffered several injuries but is recovering, his mother said Thursday.
Cody Thompson, 15, was one of four occupants of a car that crashed on East 1550 Road in rural Douglas County. His mother, Michelle Thompson, said Thursday afternoon that her son suffered a fractured skull, a "nicked" artery and a concussion, but is fine now. When asked when he might be released from the hospital she said, "We're hoping any minute."
One other passenger, Marquise Guesby, 17, was transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was treated and released Wednesday, according to a nursing supervisor.
Steve Lewis, a Douglas County Sheriff's Department spokesperson, said Thursday the vehicle was driven by Nicholas Ham, 17, who does not have a driver's license. He could not say whether any charges would be filed.
The vehicle was traveling north on the narrow gravel road at a speed "faster than prudent," Lewis said at the scene. The driver lost control and struck a tree.
Ham and Jordan Green, 16, declined medical attention after the accident, Lewis said.
