20th Street house fire linked to smoking, investigators conclude; damage estimated at $132K

On Thursday, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical investigators determined the cause of a Wednesday house fire to be accidental because of “improper disposal of smoking materials.”

All five occupants of the home at 1012 W. 20th St. were safely evacuated and damage estimates for the structure and its contents totaled about $132,000, department officials said Thursday.

Fire-medical crews responded to the call at 11:34 a.m. Wednesday and arrived to heavy flames coming from the house’s front-left bedroom window.

Chief Mark Bradford said that Douglas County Red Cross had been contacted to assist the occupants with finding shelter if needed.

Also during the control of the fire, a water main burst along Maine Street, just north of 20th Street, and city utility crews were called for repairs.
