Jury finds KU student guilty of aggravated battery; December sentencing set

A jury in Douglas County District Court on Wednesday found a 22-year-old Kansas University student guilty of aggravated battery in connection with a fight that sent a Dallas man to a Kansas City-area trauma center.

Alexander L. Pendleton, of Texas, was arrested on May 17 after Lawrence police responded to a disturbance at Brothers Bar and Grill, 1105 Massachusetts St. A 24-year-old Dallas man, identified in a public police report as Robert Trigg Edwards, was taken to a trauma center with significant facial injuries after being knocked to the ground and beaten with elbows to the face.

After a nearly three-day trial, the jury found Pendleton guilty. After the verdict, District Judge Paula B. Martin ordered an anger evaluation, substance-abuse evaluation and community corrections plan in addition to a presentence investigation.

Sentencing is set for 11 a.m. on Dec. 19. Pendleton, who pleaded not guilty to the charges in July, remains free on a $30,000 bond.
