40 years ago: Routes proposed for bicycling to KU

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 4, 1973:

The Lawrence Traffic Safety Commission was expecting to receive a subcommittee’s proposal for the establishment of bicycle routes to serve the Kansas University campus entrance, then considered to be at the Chi Omega fountain. One route was proposed to run from the Daisy Hill dormitory area north on Engel Road from 15th to Crescent Road, then east on Crescent to campus. The other proposed route would run from the corner of Yale and Schwartz through the surrounding neighborhood and then up to campus. The subcommittee was recommending that the routes be marked with signs, as the road widths of 26 to 27 feet were believed to be too narrow for the painting of lanes. The routes had been prepared using suggestions from the Mt. Oread Bicycle Club and bike traffic figures collected by the KU Security and Traffic office.
