From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 3, 1913:

• “Sixty-six years ago Lathrop Bullene, then 21 years old, and Miss Susan Read, a happy bride, 17 years old, were married. Today these two observed the anniversary of this event with a family dinner at their home, Elm Park Place, on the southeast limits of the city. It was indeed a happy occasion marking the passing of sixty-six years of life together. The aged couple, who so long had fought the battles of life together, happy and healthy in their old age enjoyed the occasion as much in every way as did the great grand children who were present today. The wedding anniversary of the Bullenes is always a pleasant occasion in Lawrence, but each year as the bride and groom grow older the family gathering at the home seems more significant, more enjoyable…. During their first years in Lawrence they lived a block from the main street in the regular kind of pioneer residence, a little square house onto which additions were built from time to time, as the family needs grew and building became more convenient…. The house was occupied by some of the Bullene family until about fifteen years ago…. Mr. and Mrs. Bullene are both in good health and Mr. Bullene is remarkably active for one of his years, continually giving his personal attention to his business affairs.”
• “Alumni of the University of Kansas will wander back to the campus on November 15 for an Old ‘Home Week’ celebration. Incidentally, the grads will have an opportunity to see the Jayhawker-Nebraska game, which experts predict will be one of the warmest of recent years…. This is the second annual homecoming of the K. U. graduates. Last year they returned by hundreds for the Missouri game, when Kansas closed the season with a brilliant victory.”
• “Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Petz of Lawrence were killed yesterday near Newton, Kansas, as the result of a collision between a motor car and a motorcycle. The couple was riding in the motor car which was driven by a son, M. J. Petz of Windom, Kansas, when the crash came…. News of the tragedy was received here last night by a son and daughter who lived with their parents at 1611 Rhode Island street. Robert Petz is employed at the office of the Lawrence Paper Manufacturing Company. He attended the Lawrence High school last winter. A daughter, Miss Gretchen Petz, is a student in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Kansas. The Petz family moved to Lawrence only a few months ago.”
