Free State girls eye state title in cross country

This fall, Free State High’s girls cross country team has finished first at five races. At the other three, they took second.

The Firebirds, coming off a regional championship, hope to make it six team titles today in their final race at Rim Rock Farm, site of the Class 6A state championships.

Freshman Emily Venters, sophomore Claire Sanner and senior Bailey Sullivan have led FSHS all season, with the support of Sarah Whipple, Kiran Cordes, Molly McCord and Rosemary Newsome.

Regional champs Olathe East, Shawnee Mission West and Garden City could be Free State’s top threats.

Free State’s boys qualified their whole team for state, too, with a third-place regional finish. Ryan Liston, Ethan Donley, Thomas Becker, Tanner Hockenbury, Connor Ballenger, Curtis Zicker and Cole Stallard have helped the boys win two team titles of their own this season.

Sophomore Nathan Pederson will be the only Lawrence High runner at state.

Rim Rock will be the site of the state meet for classes 3A, 5A and 6A. Racing starts with 3A girls at 10 a.m. and concludes with 5A boys at 12:30 p.m. The 6A boys run at 10:30 and 6A girls at noon.
