City represented on league baseball team

The city’s baseball teams earned heaps of accolades from their Sunflower League peers this season, including a Player of the Year award for Lawrence High junior catcher Drew Green and Coach of the Year honors for Free State coach Mike Hill.

Following the Lions’ 14-8 season, Green, senior shortstop Shane Willoughby and junior pitcher Brandon Bell made the league’s first team.

So did senior pitcher Dane McCullough and senior closer Sam Hearnen, from the 18-4 Firebirds, who landed every member of their starting lineup on the league’s honor lists.

FSHS had four second-team selections: senior first baseman Jacob Caldwell, junior third baseman Cameron Pope, senior shortstop Anthony Miele and sophomore outfielder Joel Spain. LHS senior CJ Stuever was named the second team’s utility player.

Free State junior pitcher Ryan Cantrell, senior catcher Lee McMahon, sophomore second baseman Cooper Karlin and junior outfielders Zach Bickling and Joe Dineen all received honorable mention, as did Lawrence senior pitcher Adam Rea and sophomore infielder Michael Sinks.
