40 years ago: Fun water feature installed in South Park wading pool

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 23, 1973:

  • A new feature was installed this week at the South Park wading pool. A concrete porpoise made its appearance at the pool; its job description was to send a cooling spray of water over young children who would be using the pool after its opening on June 11. (Kathy Saldivar, 2, was pictured on the front page testing the new porpoise by sitting on it.) Local swimmers didn’t have to wait until mid-June to cool off, as the larger Municipal Pool was scheduled to open its doors on the upcoming weekend.
  • President Nixon today announced that he had no intention of resigning in the wake of the latest revelations about the Watergate wiretapping case. While acknowledging “apparently wide-ranging efforts” to cover up the scandal, Nixon continued to deny any knowledge of or participation in illegal activities. “I will not abandon my responsibilities. I will continue to do the job I was elected to do,” said the president in a statement this week.
