From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 21, 1988:

An unnamed out-of-town developer was expected to propose a new Lawrence riverfront project at the next meeting of the Downtown Improvement Committee, to be held this week. Few details were available on this date; the identity of the developer and the size and nature of the project were to be confirmed at the meeting. The project was to involve a site along the south bank of the Kansas River running approximately from the river bridge to New York Street. The Bowersock Mills & Power Co., had a long-term lease from the city to use the tract, where it operated a hydroelectric plant and owned several other industrial buildings.

Consumption of drinking water in Kansas University’s Lindley Hall was restricted today after a test had indicated possible contamination in the water supply. Following a complaint from an unidentified source, officials had tested a sample from a faucet in a first-floor laboratory and had found possible contamination with 1,2-dichlorethane, a chemical considered a “cancer inducer” by the Environmental Protection Agency. Additional tests were being conducted on the building’s water supply.
