40 years ago: 1923 KU basketball team shares memories of championship year

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 19, 1973:

Kansas University’s 1923 national championship basketball team were gathering this weekend to celebrate their 50th anniversary. In a celebration last night, all of the returning members of the 16-man squad (12 of whom were still living) had a chance to speak of their memories of their national-title year. Chancellor Raymond Nichols, who had been a freshman in that year, remarked on the constant loyal alumni support that had not wavered in the last half-century. Former coach Phog Allen, 86, had been unable to attend the reunion but had sent a tape recording greeting the team and recalling some “anecdotes and idiosyncrasies” about them. At the conclusion of the taped remarks, the audience of about 100 had risen in a standing ovation in honor of the absent coach.
