KU commencement set for 10:30 a.m. Sunday

Kansas University’s spring 2013 graduates are set to begin their traditional walk down the hill at 10:30 a.m. Sunday for KU’s 141st annual commencement, barring inclement weather.

Gates to Memorial Stadium will open at 9 a.m., and graduates and faculty are scheduled to begin their walk down Mount Oread and into the stadium at 10:30 a.m.

If weather forces a delay in the ceremony, KU will announce details at 9 a.m. Sunday. The announcement will be posted online at alert.ku.edu, broadcast on Channel 6 on local cable and shared on several local radio stations. If weather conditions are poor early on but improve by late morning, the ceremony will move to 12:30 p.m., according to a KU release.

As of Wednesday, the National Weather Service’s forecast for Lawrence calls for likely showers and thunderstorms Sunday, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation.

Wes Jackson, a leader in the area of sustainable agriculture and the founder of The Land Institute in Salina, will be the featured speaker at KU’s commencement. KU will stream video of the ceremony online at commencement.ku.edu and offer viewing in Woodruff Auditorium at the Kansas Union. About 4,000 graduates are expected to take part, KU announced.
