Expanded T

To the editor:

The Lawrence Transit System recently announced a plan to begin operating 24 hours. The plan, as described, is nothing more than a glorified taxi service. I propose the T run a pilot program this summer expanding all applicable routes to 24 hours a day, seven days a week, running on the hour from midnight to 5 a.m., to determine potential ridership.

Currently, the T operates from approximately 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and not at all on Sunday. Many citywide events in the former Community Events Calendar, now “Datebook,” don’t begin until 7 or 8 p.m. Expanding service hours would accommodate everyone, not merely third-shift workers. This would alleviate some of the problems with traffic and parking downtown and obviate the need for more parking lots or structures. Adding Sunday service would benefit churchgoers and those wishing to spend time at the many civic events scheduled on Sundays. Give your car and your nerves a break. Save gas. Ride the T.
