KU stopper Piché gets Big 12 award

Kansas University baseball reliever Jordan Piché on Monday became the first three-time winner of the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Award.

Piché, a right-hander from Greeley, Colo., pitched in four of Kansas’ five victories last week, earning his team-leading sixth win of the season and earning a save in Friday night’s series-opening win against Baylor. Piché threw a total of 61/3 innings and added six strikeouts to his season total.

The nation’s leader in ERA entering the week, Piché helped Kansas shut out Wichita State Tuesday night before pitching in every contest in KU’s first-ever sweep of Baylor over the weekend. In four outings, Piché was tagged with just one run, raising his ERA to 0.72 for the year in 24 appearances. That mark is the second-best in the country through games completed Sunday.
